About

We have developed and clinically tested a new diagnostic approach for inflammatory bowel disease based upon quantifying biomarkers in non-invasively collected (self-collected) samples of highly informative colorectal mucus. Our method both detects bowel inflammation (and discriminates it from irritable bowel syndrome) and allows determining inflammation intensity in order to either assess IBD treatment efficiency or monitor IBD patients in remission. Our approach is presented in detail in three peer-reviewed papers (the key one is: Loktionov et al. 2017;32:992-1002. The relevant IP is protected by two patents granted in the US (US9448145 & US10001492).

Key Benefits

The key features of our innovation are its higher diagnostic efficiency, patient (customer)-friendliness and easy repeatability. Currently available methods usually use faecal samples that require unpleasant stool collection that is often disliked by patients and limits compliance. Our choice of biomarkers (a combination of two covering both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease) appears to be optimal in terms of diagnostic sensitivity and specificity. Clinical introduction of our approach for IBD monitoring is likely to reduce the risk of unexpected secondary flare-ups and complications. Many unnecessary invasive and expensive colonoscopies, which are currently widely used for confirming IBD diagnosis can be avoided. IBD treatment costs will be reduced once treatment efficiency assessment by repeated testing is applied.
