We have developed a vert - farming system creating mushrooms under controlled conditions and process them to create the meat texture using a new process line to supply vegan mfc
About
The innovation is the brainchild of a regional farmer who has developed a process to turn mushrooms into fibrous strands which can act as a meat replacement or a meat filler. To support the innovation, a full vertical farm system using sustainable growth pods produced from recycled material has been developed with industry 4.0 control enabling zero carbon emissions during the growth phase. The company is already in discussions with a local Vegan Food Manufacturer regarding the system and its benefits of creating just in time production for food producers. The company is currently working with the Sage team at Newcastle University, a local design house and collectively they are currently developing an Innovate UK submission for the current agriculture call closing Feb 26th 2020
Key Benefits
The innovation provides a zero carbon approach to sustainable vertical farming for mushrooms. Each growth pod is built with an industry 4.0 gateway that enable the growth phases to be monitored. The pod is maintained by the latest technology and the mushrooms are supplied with the optimum nutrients to gain maximum yield. The mushrooms are then harvested by a functional cobot and placed directly into the production line to be blanched, processed and prepared for transfer to the end user.
Applications
Although the system is designed specifically for mushrooms currently to supply the plant based food requirement, the growth pods and I4.0 gateway system can be used for other plant based products such as greens etc.
