Summary

Background

Large numbers of products are made and sold fraudulently and this means that the proprietary products lose sales, Governments lose taxes and potential risk to public health increased.

For example:

  • In 2019 the UK Government estimated a loss between £2.5 Billion and £3.5 Billion in revenue per annum for tobacco products.
  • In 2017 There was a £17 Million illegal tobacco factory fraud discovered.
  • In 2016 Illicit cigarette processing factory discovered.  Machines found that could produce 35 Million Cigarettes a month.

Similar cases can be found for products containing alcohol.

Challenge

Fujitsu is currently looking for technologies which provide consumers with an easy test to prove the integrity of the product and where the product has been, and process that it’s a genuine branded unit.

The challenge is to connect the person, the mobile phone and the product packaging.  A possible second one is to demonstrate auditability to customs officers (bonded warehouses).

We can consider gamifying the customer experience.
