Summary

Background

Our Technology division provides a suite of services in the design, maturation and implementation of new technologies and engineering services for sustainable energy production around the world.  We do this by helping organisations at all stages of their project lifecycle to assess, test, and implement world-class innovations to support plant optimisations; lowering the costs of production; and reducing the environmental impact of operations. We work closely with a network of global partners to create opportunities for a more sustainable energy future.

Challenge

Our client, a global energy company, is seeking to reinvent its maintenance strategy by employing technologies that will reduce cost and frequency of inspections.

One area of improvement is corrosion protection of high temperature equipment. The equipment is stainless steel or carbon steel pipelines that are either exposed to atmospheric conditions or covered with insulation. The pipelines are used to transport hot water or other fluids. Currently used maintenance coatings on the pipelines cannot be effectively applied while the line is operating over the complete range of temperatures (ambient to 200 degrees Celsius) and this results in higher cost operations and process safety risks.

Our client is seeking to collaborate with a partner to develop a corrosion prevention solution that meets the requirements below. Both traditional liquid coating solutions and innovative non-liquid coating solutions are encouraged.

Requirements:

Operational requirements:

  • Withstand operating temperatures up to 200°C
  • Provide corrosion protection of carbon-steel and stainless steel that is exposed to the atmosphere and under insulation

Application properties:

  • Suitable for online and offline applications: substrate temperature ranging from ambient to 200°C
  • Application technology should be easily transferable and should not require highly specialized applicators required. The current workforce of tradesmen can be upskilled in application
  • If liquid coating: application by brush and spray over the whole temperature range

Cost-efficient maintenance solution:

  • Minimal surface preparation required (hand tool/ power tool cleaning)
  • Compatible with existing coating systems including epoxy phenolic and inorganic zinc silicate coatings
  • Application to be completed within one 12-hour shift
  • Anticipated lifetime of minimum 10 years
