Summary

Background

Trusted by global business leaders as their IT & Digital consultancy of choice, we use technology to solve complex business challenges. We work with blue chip organisations to drive innovation and value from their investment in technology. This requires us to continually scan and identify current and emerging innovations that will give competitive advantage to our clients in areas from retail, supply chain, e-commerce, workforce management, automation and AI.

Challenge

Online retailing benefited greatly from COVID-19. When the pandemic struck, for many retailers online sales was a response to a once-in-a-lifetime emergency. A year later, as restrictions ease and the world appears to be restarting, a large proportion of retailing will remain online as it has become an essential part of any retailer’s operations.

But the online solution is creating headaches that many companies have been unprepared for.  Whilst traditional retailers have been transforming and changing their business processes to capture more online sales, those responsible for the supply chain have seen their workload increase many fold and a mountain of returns and stock has been building up. Free returns seems to be the way most UK retailers have gone; indeed some have been doing it for ever, but at what cost? The complexities of managing stock and ensuring that items are returned to the correct location is a constant headache particularly for multi-channel retailers, not to mention damaged stock that cannot be repackaged. A recent estimate by Forbes seems to indicate that returns can be as high as 40% for some fashion retailers.

We are therefore looking to see what innovative solutions exist out in the market place to combat this ever increasing problem for retailers.
