White space expertise
Using idle TV White Space (TVWS - the small gaps between the frequencies used for TV broadcasting) enables high bandwidth, low latency, short range (up to 10 km) communications that can penetrate trees and buildings, and travel around hills. In contrast to GSM, which is auctioned to the highest bidder, Ofcom has committed to providing access to TVWS communication free of charge. This enables new data operators to enter the market with innovative new data models that do not bear costs of licensed spectrum access. It is also possible for end users of data communications to create their own bespoke customised systems that do not require GSM communications or expensive infrastructure investment. The technology is relevant to a wide range of high bandwidth, low latency communications, particularly last mile applications, including ports and maritime. Queen Mary has broad experience developing communication systems for TVWS, including antenna design and have patent protected technology in this area. We have existing links with specialist SMEs that can support turnkey system design and installation.
