Background: Urban encroachment of military bases is a serious problem, affecting training exercises and overall military readiness. The military currently performs noise monitoring around bases to ensure that environmental conditions are favorable for tests or exercises. Despite refinements, current monitoring systems still suffer from occasional false positives and rely heavily on human interpretation.   Technology: University researchers have developed a noise classifier for the DOD which is able to discern impulses or blast noises from other sources, such as wind and aircraft. This greatly aids to monitor the community noise that they create to validate complaints for possible damage claims.       Application: * Discern impulse (blast) noise from other sources, including wind and aircraft   Advantages: * Highly accurate single channel noise classification * Does not suffer from a high degree of false positives (wind noise)  * Is not very computationally intensive * Uses time, frequency, and statistical features of the signal classified
