Acoustic thermometry (AT) determines temperature by measuring the time taken for sound waves to be transmitted through a medium such as gas. The approach brings many potential benefits (such as reduced ‘drift’ and calibration requirements) but has found only limited application to date, due in part to complexity and cost.  The University of Salford has developed an innovative, simplified acoustic thermometer with significantly fewer hardware requirements, potentially improving the flexibility and applicability of AT.  Key Benefits  Relatively low cost and simple to use No “drift” over time Consistent performance without any calibration Only simple and reliable hardware required Gives bulk temperature readings Virtually unaffected by radiant heat Can be manufactured from a variety of materials.  Niche Potential Industrial Applications Bulk temperature measurement inside vehicles, aircraft, buildings and pipelines Very low and very high temperatures where other temperature monitors cannot operate Noisy environments where standard AT is impractical (acoustic pollution) Environments where thermal radiation otherwise interferes with measurement Weather and condition monitoring.  The Opportunity The University is seeking suitable partners for collaborative development and onward licence.
