Estimates workload exclusively on the clearances provided to air traffic, without impedance upon ATCOs’ work Can be used in real-time and does not require post-operational tasks

About

Over the past 40 years there has been a tenfold increase in the number airline passengers to 3.1 billion in 2013. This number is expected to reach 6.4 billion by 2030. Air Traffic Management systems are facing growing pressures to maximise efficiency and improve safety. Air Traffic Control Operators (ATCOs) are responsible for traffic in a defined airspace. It is crucial, therefore, that ATCOs’ workloads are carefully monitored and controlled. AirTrack is a software solution system for Air Traffic Control. It employs a workload estimation model to monitor and analyse ATCOs’ workloads. The model calculates the ATCO’s perceived level of scenario complexity based on the strategy the ATCO uses to control traffic. AirTrack allows for the fact that ATCOs can choose between a number of different strategies for a given perceived complexity level, depending on their individual preferences. Different strategies deployed to manage the same level of perceived complexity are assigned the same workload level. Using expert ATCO qualitative rankings, the model associates each perceived complexity level with a workload level.
