Our researchers have discovered a new class of modified aniline polymers which have exceptional anti-microbial activity and are easily combined with conventional plastics.

About

The Technology  In the last decade, several papers have been published in scientific literature identifying limited anti-microbial and anti-oxidant properties of polymerised aniline, a semi-conducting polymer. However, being an exceptionally difficult material to process, polyaniline has been of little practical use so far. Now our researchers have discovered a new class of modified aniline polymers which have exceptional anti-microbial activity and are easily combined with conventional plastics. Applications • Packaging for raw meat – especially chicken, fish and pork • Juice and drink packaging to extend shelf-life • Conveyor belts for food processing • Wound dressings • Anti-microbial surface coatings in hospitals and factories • Sanitary, disposable clothing and other products next to human skin • Ear buds, earphones and hearing aids • Water supply systems • Air-conditioning filters • Timber preservative • Marine industry • Colour additive UniServices is now seeking partners for licensing and development. Competitive Advantages • Active at low concentration against wide range of bacteria, fungi and viruses, including antiobiotic- resistant bacteria such as MRSA • Cheap to manufacture • Easily combined with commercial plastics • Non-toxic • Autoclavable and stable to high temperature (approaching 300°C) • Insoluble in water
