Immobilization of photosensitizers (Antibacterial) in thermoplastics with no organic solvents

A novel method for eradication of bacteria in fabrics, wearable items (e.g. band-aids and disposable gloves) and water sterilization. The method relies on the immobilization of photosensitizers, which are FDA approved chemicals with strong antibacterial properties, into thermoplastics that are used in wearable items. Photosensitizer immobilization into thermoplastics was found to eradicate up to 99.999% of S. aureus bacteria. One of the technology advantages is that the immobilization of photosensitizers requires no organic solvents and is therefore reduces manufacturing costs, faster and ‘greener’ than existing methods.
