We produce a unique PHA composition that is amorphous with a sub-ambient Tg. This enables us to create a range of blends & compounds with a spectrum of performance + biodegradation
About
Our brand, PHACT, encompasses PHA-based polymers and blends that are bio-based and biodegradable in a variety of environments including industrial compost, home compost, marine and soil environments. The carbon footprint of PHACT PHA polymers is considerably (> 70+%) lower than that of conventional polymers such as PE and PP.
Packaging solutions that are based on PHACT can address the critical end-of-life and carbon footprint challenges associated conventional packaging polymers, while offering similar functionality.
Key Benefits
We aim to exploit the performance advantages that come from our unique, "new-to-the-world" amorphous PHA (A1000P) composition in creating closure solutions. These developments will leverage the advantages already evident in the market in other flexible packaging applications. When A1000P is blended into other compostable polymers such as semi-crystalline PHA (including PHACT S1000P), PLA and PBS - the following advantages are very clearly evident:
- vastly improved toughness
- increased flexibility - enables closures to achieve a snugger fit around a bottle/container
- faster rate of composting or biodegradation
- higher elongation
- easier processing with a broader processing window; also enables foaming during closure molding to lower density
Applications
Our current target markets include:
- food service ware (single-use cutlery and straws)
- flexible packaging (food packaging)
- organic waste diversion bags
- rigid packaging containers
- extrusion coating onto paper
- non-woven fabrics
- closures
