A Proprietary, Programmable, and Biodegradable Polymer-based Platform for Application in the Biomedical and Advanced Materials Markets

About

Polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHAs) are biodegradable and biocompatible polyesters produced biocatalytically from fatty acids. These materials have found widespread uses in markets ranging from sustainable replacements of non-biodegradable bulk-commodity plastics to biomaterials and tissue engineering. Our proprietary strain allows for a rational-design approach to the biosynthesis of PHA copolymers with virtually any desired combination of monomers, and the production of countless types of PHAs with distinct physical properties. Furthermore, our technology offers the production of multivalent, chemically modifiable, PHA biopolymers containing “click”-ready chemical functionalities, thus serving as an unprecedented and versatile entry point into biomedical markets such as targeted drug delivery, polymer compo-sites, and tissue engineering, to name a few.
