About

Real Time Blood Pressure Monitor and Aneurism Monitor Description: The technology disclosed herein is a device used to monitor blood pressure in moving animals and humans in real-time. The device is non-invasive and is capable of accurately monitoring blood pressure non-invasively (i.e. without being inserted intravascularly). Applications: This device will be used to non-invasively monitor blood pressure in moving animals and humans in real-time. Most importantly, the technology will be used to monitor aneurisms in patients with aortic or other large vessel aneurisms. High risk patients, such as those with Marfans syndrome, Syphillis, Ehlers Danlose syndrome, etc., will be able to monitor aortic wall strain to watch for signs of an aneurism rupturing. Advantages: Presently, there are no devices capable of monitoring blood pressure in moving animals and humans that are non-invasive to the vessel wall. The most notable device currently available to researchers is a telemetry unit developed by Miller Instruments. Miller?s monitor uses strain gauge technology to record blood pressure in moving rodents. Unfortunately, this technology completely obstructs the vessel wall, which compromises blood supply to an entire area, causing inaccurate measurements when studying cerebral activity or physiological parameters, simultaneously. In addition, the telemetry signal is incredibly sensitive to electric noise, making it very difficult to accurately monitor blood pressure in a patient running on a treadmill. After the blood pressure is done being monitored with this device it is difficult and sometimes even impossible to restore the vessel walls original architecture, preventing this technology from becoming clinically applicable in the future. Therefore, it is important that a new type of device is developed that overcomes these limitations and still allows monitoring of blood pressure in moving mammals. This technology proposes a new monitoring system that depends on a tonometry method that relies on the micro movements of the blood vessel wall to measure pressure. This new method is completely non-invasive and shows promising results in effectively and accurately measuring blood pressure in moving animals and humans. URV Reference Number: 6-2106
