CCT is an impactful plant nutrient technology for sustainable crop production that delivers on reduced environmental impacts and improved nutrient use efficiency.

About

Agriculture today is defined by the need for massive increases in crop yields through accelerating modernization to support the increase in the global human population. However, soil nutrients are often not being efficiently replaced to maintain high crop yields in a sustainable manner or are being lost to leaching and volatilization resulting in reduced economics for farmers due to the need for reapplication and over-application and increased environmental impact. Many common fertilizers are applied in highly water-soluble forms which render them susceptible to leaching, especially in environments of high precipitation and light textured or marginal soils. The global problem of fertilizer runoff is growing and exacerbated by population growth, urbanization and the resultant constant need for higher and higher crop yields. Global regulatory regimes surrounding fertilizer application and leaching are expected by many in agriculture to become increasingly onerous in the coming years as algal blooms and mass aquatic kills have garnered the attention of mainstream media. CCT aims to become the first carbon-carried, enhanced efficiency fertilizer (EEF) platform for broad-acre application. Currently there is a broad category of organic-based fertilizers which includes diverse formulations of products that provide plants with nutrients and/or improve organic matter in the soil but none on the large broad acre commercial scale. They are applied to plants and/or soils to improve soil fertility, plant vigor, produce quality and yield. Organic-based fertilizers are used in both organic and conventional agriculture. What separates CCT from the other organic based fertilizers is its high plant nutrient composition and its potential for slow-release properties that will increase the efficiencies of the nutrients applied to the soil, making it the first applicable broad acre enhanced efficiency organo-mineral fertilizer. CCT captures value as a circular economy solution by upcycling waste biomass into a scalable fertilizer platform to deliver the nutrients plants need to thrive. Plant macronutrients are part of the formulation, and through our process, the carbon is transformed into a combination of stable (resists decomposition) and available (food source for soil microorganisms) organic matter. When the product is added to soils, plants take up the nutrients while the carbon component promotes soil health, carbon sequestration, and reduced nutrient losses. Further, the final product is simple to implement as standard warehousing and farming equipment can effectively deploy the materials in broad-acre farming or in horticultural applications. Environmental benefits of this project include improved water and air quality by increasing soil health and the efficiency of utilization of fertilizer nutrients used in the agricultural industry. Increasing the use of EEFs will reduce volatilization of ammonia into the atmosphere, nitrous oxide emissions, and leaching of nitrate and sulfate into our waters, while at the same time increasing crop yield. Nutrient leaching has the potential to increase nutrient loads in streams, lakes and oceans with potential consequences such as phytoplankton bloom, hypoxia (depletion of oxygen), and associated dead zones. More efficient use of our fertilizer inputs has the potential to greatly reduce these environmental impacts. A further potential application of CCT technology comes from the ammonia input which can be derived from sour water strippers in some cases avoiding NOx generation from the incineration of ammonia or potentially large NH3 emissions produced by poultry farming houses. Thus, CCT production not only reduces CO2 emissions from the natural gas industry but also has the potential to reduce N2O, CH4, and NH3 emissions from multiple industries, including agriculture.
