Smart coatings which can both prevent and monitor corrosion of steel through the use of a hard coating deposited by thermal spraying with embedded FBG sensors.

About

Summary: Though corrosion is well understood in terms of mechanisms and methods of control, it still accounts for a notable number of failures in pipelines buried or on the ground. This is due to a large number of potential complications such as varying soil properties along the pipeline and over time, local cracks on the soft coating surface, separation of coating from the pipeline surface, and corrosive environments. To address this, Azarmi et al developed smart coatings which can both prevent and monitor corrosion of steel through the use of a hard coating deposited by thermal spraying with embedded Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sensors.     Benefits: Simultaneous corrosion prevention and monitoring Anti-corrosion hard coatings have low porosity, good cohesion, and significantly improved corrosion resistance over bare steel pipeline Embedded FBG sensors qualitatively identify initialization of corrosion and other defects in pipelines and indicate the corrosion type or defect and send warning signals to the inspectors A variety of coatings can be used based on compatibility with the metal and specific sensor, providing numerous applications in metal structures including, but not limited to, pipelines, bridges, and building support structures   Technology: The technology includes coatings with an embedded sensor in addition to the methods of making and using the smart coatings.
