A researcher at FAU has developed a portable, ultraviolet C-based system to sanitize both surgical/cloth and N95 face masks and other personal items. This system has a hanging rack that allows for multiple masks or other objects to be sanitized simultaneously in a home or office setting. The device can kill airborne bacteria, viruses, yeast, and mold spores within 1-5 minutes of exposure. Developed prototypes can currently treat up to six masks at the same time. However, the device has a flexible design and could hold other items such as mobile phones, keys, credit cards, toys, etc. Additionally, the system can be changed to allow for quartz and LED bulbs of different wattages and wavelengths, the sanitization of larger spaces, and a control timer for easier use.
