Absolute measurement using a single ring Compact design High reliability

About

A rotary encoder is a device which measures the angular position of a shaft around its rotational axis. Absolute rotary encoders determine the absolute position of the shaft around the rotational axis, rather than measuring movement. These devices have found uses in robotics, medical devices, and telescopes, among others. Imperial scientists have designed a new magnetic absolute rotary encoder which uses two magnetic fields to measure the shaft’s position. The new design also creates a large hollow shaft hub, which can house cables and therefore reduce the risk of cable twisting.
