A techno-economic modeling platform for multi-energy systems: power, gas and heating. Its state-of-the art optimization engine leverages flexibility to generate least cost planning

About

Artelys is an independent company specialized in optimization, decision support and modeling. Artelys develops the Artelys Crystal platform dedicated to techno-economic modeling of energy systems. The platform is built for multi-energy modeling, namely gas, power, heating or reserves. It represents all the assets composing the system: generation assets from various technologies (renewables, thermal, gas, hydro, etc.), storage assets (both gas and power), network assets (pipelines and transmission lines), and demand assets (load and flexible load). The goal is to perform the economic dispatch to operate energy systems at least cost. Relying on a state-of-the art optimization engine, the platform is able to leverage all the value given by the system’s flexibility, make the best trade off and help planning the system in a most reliable way. This technology has proven great results on power and gas systems co-optimization. Thus, our offer for this challenge consists of a Wales power and gas system modeling and co-optimization platform.

Key Benefits

By its most advanced optimization capabilities, the software brings as key benefit the economic efficiency: minimize the system’s total cost by using the resources the most adequately. For one specific player (West Wales here), it enables to operate the gas power plants taking into account the whole power and gas system, to ensure they are used efficiently, bring visibility to all the stakeholders about gas power plant usage (gas transmission network operator, and power distribution and transmission networks operators), and globally reduce environmental footprint by making best usage of the renewable power assets, and ensuring an efficient combination with natural gas to ensure the security of supply. The economic benefit is only valid if they are achievable. Our platform allows for great model customization to reflect the reality of operations. It results in realistic planning, which is needed to achieve those gains. By its operational features, the software ensures a reliable planning process, efficient and auditable. The software enables to automatically import data from various sources (flat formats, web services, data bases), to launch simulation, analyze those through a set of indicators, and export or share the schedule. This process can be used for day-ahead simulations, and for real time updates whenever new data is available.

Applications

Artelys is recognized as a world-class company in energy system modeling and decision support. Artelys assists utilities, regulators, network operators, cities and Departments of Energy in Europe, North America and Africa to better understand and operate their systems.
