Recent reports indicate that around 1.3 million tonnes of food in the UK goes to waste each year, with 1/3 of food produced never even leaving the farm. Globally, nearly half the food supply is wasted between farm and fork which accounts for around 8% global green house gas emissions. The Crafty Pickle aims to tackle this problem by using fermentation to fight food waste. By using fermentation to preserve food that would have otherwise been wasted we can help reduce carbon emissions, reduce raw material costs of production and offer food producers and wholesalers a more sustainable solution to their current food waste practices. As a result, a high value fermented food product is produced that is part of the growing 'anti-food waste' movement and appeals to ethical consumers; while also being part of the 1.1 billion dollar fermented food industry due to increased consumer interest in gut-health and wellness. No other fermented food companies are seizing the opportunity of combining these two key trends.
