Improving 3D Ultrasound Imaging Ultrasound images produced by use of freehand devices are typically inaccurate and unclear. This limits their usefulness to qualitative applications only. The Freehand 3D Ultrasound Scanner, provides a solution. Here’s how it works. A transducer probe scans the anatomy of a patient. While it’s scanning, the device’s built-in position and angle sensors collect positional information that can be evaluated in conjunction with collected timing data to produce precise points, or tags. The tags are then associated with the 2D planes normally produced by ultrasound imaging devices to create a 3D image via software. This process significantly improves the accuracy of these 3D images because there are no estimations being made. As an added accuracy-improving feature, the scanner has the ability to compensate for sensor errors. All positioning sensors are internal to the device rather than being stationed throughout a room, providing easy set-up and preventing the risk of interfering with other medical devices that may be present.
