Green Gravity - repurposing mining assets to provide renewable energy storage and dispatchable power to meet demand, deliver grid stability, and decarbonise mining.

About

At Green Gravity, we develop, install and operate cutting edge gravitational energy storage systems. We aim to become the world's lowest cost and most sustainable provider of energy storage technology. Through our focus on the circular economy, we can lead the world in creating the future of energy from the legacy of mining. Our technology has been developed utilising heavy objects moving vertically through legacy mineshafts to exchange electrical and gravitational potential energy. As heavy weighted objects are raised through the mineshaft, energy is consumed to run the winder and motors, converting electrical energy into gravitational potential energy. At other times, heavy weighted objects are lowered through the mineshaft, generating energy as the descending weight spins the winder and causes the regenerative motor to generate electricity.

Key Benefits

Green Gravity’s energy storage technology represents a breakthrough in the search for economic long-duration storage of renewable energy. By re-using mining assets, costs can be kept low. By using gravity as the fuel, we dispense with consuming the critical water, land, and chemicals which other energy storage technologies rely on.The environmental challenge we are working to resolve is related to carbon emissions from energy. As renewable energy is added to the grid to displace coal and gas, there is a resulting variability created due to the production profile of wind and solar energy. Green Gravity has developed a technology to store renewable energy when it is produced and then reproduce the energy back to the grid when it is needed.Green Gravity’s energy storage technology improves the economics of wind and solar power, leading to a faster and lower cost transition away from fossil fuels.

Applications

Who benefits from Green Gravity’s energy system and how? Mining companies - improve their environmental footprint through alternative land use applications for closed mines/ disused shafts. This is particularly relevant for Coal mines, where environmental pressure to close early is bringing forward remediation liabilities.Government - creates economic value from dis-used un-remediated land, that can fund future remediation.Renewable energy generators - realise value from smoothing their generation profile to firm their capacity and improve their revenue generation potential.Energy Network operators - benefit from grid stability improvements.Domestic suppliers - components are locally sourced.Regional communities - where mines are located, will create work and purpose in the energy transition.
