We have developed a WLAN IoT lab with IoT devices based on RPis, Linux and Python, which students are using to prototype food processing projects. Which we are enhancing to a 5G and WLAN IoT lab by adding a 5G HAT to the RPis, which should increase throughput, reduce delays and increase indoor location accuracy to less than 1cm so more high performance IoT devices can be used for controlling industrial processes. This is an ideal platform for developing prototypes in • Next generation food processing solutions • Innovative, flexible process flow / design • Digitalisation - hyperconnected, predictive analytics, data led solutions Examples of what we are currently working on are projects that: 1. Builds on an Undergraduate project that measures humidity and temperature and actuates a watering valve to issue water/spray. It is to be enhanced to include analysis of the growth of plant and ripeness of fruit and the picking of the fruit from a robot. 2. Derived from a direct need in Ghana to protect farm crop and livestock assets using ground or air based (drone) sensors.
