Large scale CO2 heat pumps combined with thermal energy storage using phase change materials can provide effective and economic solutions to decarbonise large commercial HVAC needs

About

The gas transition is very challenging for large scale users of heating. Current electrical solutions are inefficient and the available heat pumps tend to use refrigerants that damage the ozone layer, have high global warming potential or break down to make PFAS which is polluting our air and waterways. Large scale CO2 heat pumps matched with smart software and thermal energy storage systems with phase change materials allow the scale, reliability, sustainability and economics of most large commercial users of heating and cooling to be addressed in new ways. These hybrid energy systems are customised to each situation and are controlled by smart software which is aware of complex energy market conditions, the weather and predicted demands and which optimises for lowest cost of energy and maximises use of available renewables. Glaciem's large scale thermal energy storage systems with phase change materials allow for high density storage of cooling. In this way customers are able to exploit energy market differential pricing, load management, peak shaving, load shifting as well as exploiting heating and cooling demands that are not happening at the same time. Glaciem's ACFA Smart Software forecasts demands, conditions, prices and behind the meter generation every 20 minutes and develops optimised control strategies pushed to the control systems of the hybrid solutions to ensure a hands-off operation that delivers optimal results. Glaciem's innovative solutions have been proven in large scale HVAC including sites in both of Australia's two largest supermarket companies, multi-cinema complexes, office buildings and public spaces. In most situations, the solution reduces both capital cost and operating costs compared to "business as usual" solutions, has similar space requirements and supports both green-field and retrofit applications. It is installed and supported by HVAC+R contractors (often a customer's existing contractor) who have most of the skills in-house. The system is a fully documented system ready for integration into a buildings documentation set and able to be fully supported by mechanical engineering consultants and contractors throughout it's life. It is built using commercially available and pervasive products from renowned suppliers with established global support and supply chains. Every system provides for multi-mode operation including heating, cooling, combined heating and cooling, rejecting heat to the atmosphere and sourcing heat from the ambient conditions or other heat sources. Further the systems are controlled by an Internet of Things with a human-machine interface available locally and remotely for easy support around the globe. Glaciem has a proven capability to partner with contract manufacturers and fabricators which can support local content and local jobs with the potential to reduce lead times by avoiding unnecessary shipping. Glaciem has large scale projects it has delivered in Singapore and New Zealand. It has recently won a place on The Clean Fight New York and has well advanced negotiations for the manufacturing and fabrication of it's products in New York State. It has relationships with partners in UK, India, France, Spain and Italy.

Key Benefits

* Effective and economic solutions to the difficult decarbonisation challenges of complex HVAC and Refrigeration applications of large scale commercial precincts and buildings * Reduced capital cost and operating costs with longer life * Non-toxic, non-flammable refrigerant and thermal battery suitable for deployment into all commercial settings with minimal risk management concerns * Flexible retrofit and greenfields designs that have similar space constraints to conventional solutions, but are more reliable and support more effective decarbonisation * Supportable with existing HVAC+R contractors around the world * Proven in large scale mission-critical heating and cooling applications, including supermarkets, office buildings and public spaces * Supports the achievement of Net Zero outcomes required by Hammerson's public decarbonisation commitments

Applications

Decarbonisation of large scale (> 400kW heating or cooling) HVAC and refrigeration in the following settings: - Existing Hammerson destinations (or new purchases), including economic retrofit support for the gas transition allowing Hammerson's agile response to decarbonising the existing built environment and the reinvigoration of assets. Often can be achieved with minimal disruption. - Support of new development energy efficiency and net zero carbon intensity goals including for new districts, precincts, individual buildings or spaces - Retail (supermarkets, big box warehouses, malls) - Commercial Office spaces (multi-story buildings or large footprint spaces) - Public Realm (exhibition spaces, cinemas, entertainment, aquariums, indoor winter sports, other indoor sports, leisure centres, swimming centres/pools etc) - Mixed Use Developments (residential - HVAC and domestic water heating and associated commercial) - Hotels and Hospitality (including space heating and cooling, domestic hot water, cool rooms, commercial freezers, etc) - Cold Chain and Logistics (reference the next question, we have a number of filed and patent pending applications as well as licensed technology and trade secrets)
