IDCs provide a secure connection via the internet, channelling data through firewalls without additional inbound routing.

About

Many of today’s systems rely on modem communications between remote locations and a central data collection point. Where a network connection is available, it is often advantageous to use this in place of a landline or wireless connection for reasons of cost and reliability; however, it is often not practical to replace a modem with a terminal server because of its inherent lack of security and the impact that the necessary inbound routing can have on the network’s security. The IDC is a programmable network interface that is supplied in a sealed enclosure that is smaller than most modems. It automatically sets up a secure IP connection to the central computer and provides a transparent communication channel between the central computer and the remote equipment. IDCs are ‘OEM’ devices; that is, they are intended for sale to and used by other equipment manufacturers for incorporation into their equipment or systems. The generic form of the IDC is supplied with a serial host interface and Ethernet port for use in industrial utility metering. This particular model of the IDC can be applied to any instrument using a serial communications port. IDCs are supplied in a small, industrial grade plastic case. The next generation of IDCs, due to be released in 2016, will also be available with Wi‑Fi connectivity.

Applications

Coherent Research supplies IDCs with customised hardware and software for particular OEM applications: for example as a DIN rail enclosure with ModBus RS485, RS485 and RS232 interfaces for automatic logging of meter readings. Coherent Research has been supplying Ethernet connected IDCs for more than five years; IDCs have a proven track record of reliable operation. IDCs are designed and manufactured in Great Britain with the benefit of being able to be deployed worldwide. IDCs are the creation of Coherent Research Limited who have more than 25 years of experience in design and production of high volume industrial data communications products, supplying a variety of vertical markets and major blue chip companies across the globe.
