KC8 continues to reach new milestones on its pathway to commercializing its carbon capture technology, focused on its patented suite of capture processes utlising potassium carbonate solvents. The UNO processes, specifically its UNO MK3 process, uses a precipitating form of the technology. These processes are at the heart of KC8 and provide major capital and operating cost reductions, making it the superior capture process. The UNO MK3 technology is significantly different from current international practice in carbon capture. It nominally captures 90-95% of post combustion carbon dioxide using a benign inorganic precipitating solvent. This offers an environmentally friendly, lowest cost capture process for all types of industrial emissions, with major benefits over current amine-based technologies.

Our team continues to develop a range of intellectual property that will contribute to lower the cost of capture, in turn enhancing and accelerating CCUS as a leading greenhouse gas mitigation tool. The implementation of KC8's UNO MK3 process technology is made commercial through its ability to:·        Lower overall cost (up to 50% less than the best amines)·        Lower energy use (up to 15% less than the best amine-based technology)·        Tolerant of flue gas oxygen levels·        Tolerant of flue gas contaminants, e.g SOx, NOx, etc.·        Multi-impurity capture and production of valuable by-products (no degradation of products)·        Low energy of regeneration < 2.2 GJ/tCO2·        Low volatility and environmental impact (SOx and NOx converted to fertilizer products)·        Solvent sourced within current global Potassium market (readily available)·        Plant design is scalable to allow capacity from 10,000s to 1,000,000s tpa of CO2 capture.

Applications

Through KC8’s continued pathway to technology commercialisation, it has been able to achieve a number of milestones that continue to provide confidence to the wider industry. It's core focus is currently to support the two largest hard-to-abate sectors, being Power Generation and Cement industries. Aligned with this focus, KC8’s two commercial demonstration plant projects that are due to enter into detailed design and commence construction within 2023 are to be applied to those two industries. The first is the PACER (Potassium carbonate for Absorption for Clinker Emissions Reduction) project which is to be established at Cement Australia’s cement production plant in Gladstone, QLD. The second is a demonstration project through the USA Department of Energy’s (DoE’s) APRA-E program, with the plant being established at the DoE’s National Carbon Capture Center in Alabama, USA. The external support and funding for the two projects continues to highlight not only the drive for investment in CCUS from industry and government, but also the understanding of the commercial, technical and environmental benefits to be realised by the implementation of the UNO MK3 technology.
