Carbon nanotube sensor that measures breath acetone concentration

About

Ketosis occurs when the body burns fat instead of sugar. The metabolic by-products of fat breakdown include ketones, such as acetone, which build up and become detectable in bodily fluids. Ketosis can be a sign of metabolic dysfunction – as in the case of poorly-controlled diabetes – or it can be intentionally-induced through the consumption of a low carbohydrate diet. In either case, monitoring ketosis is important for health. Currently, ketone monitoring is done using blood or urine, but these tests are either expensive, invasive, or inaccurate. In contrast, NanoKeto is a low-cost handheld breathalyzer that allows users to easily and accurately measure ketosis at home. The NanoKeto device contains a carbon nanotube sensor that measures breath acetone concentration. Compared to other acetone sensors on the market, NanoKeto’s is both more sensitive and more specific. While the sensor can detect 20 ppm acetone in various environments, its response to CO2 is negligible. NanoKeto is also able to distinguish between acetone and ethanol. Another aspect that sets NanoKeto apart from other acetone tests is that it offers web connectivity, which enables easy data tracking over time as well as data sharing with doctors, nutritionists, or trainers.
