CPL Industries recognise that offering industrial users an anthracite/biocarbon briquette product to be used for industrial processes in place of metallurgic coke, anthracite and bituminous coal can reduce the carbon emissions of industry and help with carbon reduction targets. Indeed, conventional anthracite extracted from mines for use in industry has a lower carbon footprint than metallurgic coke, for example when used for smelting or as a carbon addition in electric arc furnaces , or from briquettes used with a binder. CPL’s maximum profit area is through the production of briquettes and today CPL can produce 400,000 tonnes of anthracite briquettes per year using the existing installed briquetting capacity in the UK, with an additional 200,000 tonnes per year capacity available in Ireland. This installed capacity allows CPL the flexibility to produce briquettes including a renewable carbon feedstock – this feedstock is being sourced from within CPL’s extensive supply chain and will be shipped to the UK for processing before it is distributed to industrial consumers. The biocarbon is from fully renewable sources and can be matched to the final product proximate characteristics. By providing a renewable replacement for metallurgic coke, CPL can support early-moving businesses to decarbonise their activities ahead of the competition. This in turn allows CPL and their customers to be leaders in industrial decarbonisation and set the bar for industry at the highest level. CPL’s significant capacity for producing low-carbon briquettes, and its decades of experience in producing, distributing and innovating solid fuel products mean that the organisation is well placed to drive change in Europe’s industrial sector and deliver a progressively lower carbon replacement for met coke, anthracite and bituminous coal. To achieve this, CPL intend to bring together a group of industry leaders and experts to capitalise on the emerging opportunity. CPL’s established and extensive network of feedstock suppliers mean that the necessary volume of renewable carbon feedstocks can be sourced to satisfy the emerging demand of industrial consumers in an efficient manner. Additionally, CPL have established relationships with key stakeholders within industry and academia and are have the appropriate knowledge and skillsets that will be required to bring the Optimax Briquettes in to the marketplace. CPL will closely work with its existing collaborators that are outlined in the schematic below to deliver this project and deliver real change within the marketplace. The stakeholders that CPL work with include leading academic institutions that will ensure the CPL’s products remain innovative and industry leading.

Key Benefits

There are a large number of energy intensive industrial processes which require carbon as a reductant, an additive and /or heat source where fossil coal anthracite and coke are difficult to replace. These industries are also under significant pressure to reduce there carbon footprint. CPL Industries are developing replacement fuel briquettes where there is the option to replace some or all of the fossil carbon with ethically sources and fully renewable carbon. The project combines CPL's 40 years plus of briquetting and extensive experience in sourcing biocarbon to produce alternate products that fully replace anthracite and coke but have a much smaller carbon footprint. In addition CPL have the necessary capacity to produce significant quantities for product approval testing and the expertise to quickly put in place additional capacity where appropriate.
