About Organopalladium complexes find use in the synthesis of many fine chemicals and pharmaceutical intermediates as they offer high conversion efficiency, lower reacton temperature etc.  Heriot-Watt University have developed several organopalladium catalyst materials for C-C and C-heteroatom bond forming reactions. These are effective in, for example,  carbonylation reactions with particular reference to the synthesis of esters of phenyl acetic acid from benzyl halides. The inventors have described synthetic methods for the organopalladium compounds that can be used to catalyse carbonylation reactions at lower temperature in high yield. A journal paper by Preston, Lindsell et al. demonstrates the high-yielding syntheses of esters of phenyl acetic acid from benzyl halides using the synthesised complexes.   Key Benefits Easy preparation of catalysts from commercially- available organopalladium compounds Good thermal and air stability of catalysts Increased activity in comparison to extant catalysts in certain reactions CAS registration: CAS849417-33-0   Applications Organopalladium catalysed reactions of the Suzuki type Carbonylation reactions e.g. Esterification of Benzyl Halides Bulk Synthesis of Pharma & Fine Chemical intermediates   IP Status Part of Heriot-Watt "Open for Business" IP portfolio; this technology is offered on a "worldwide, non-exclusive, non-transferable, royalty free basis only" and is subject to the terms and conditions of a signed agreement between the licensor and the University. The University does not hold stock of the organopalladium complexes and the licensee would be expected to manufacture the materials themselves. The university will provide documentation outlining the synthetic process and some example reactions of the catalysts.  Patent coverage has lapsed and additional technical support is available through paid consultancy where this may be required.
