About Opportunity: There are many minimally invasive alternatives to surgical resection of malignant tumours, but among them RFA has had the greatest clinical impact due to its safety and efficacy. Two major problems exist with all current RFA devices, however: accurate definition of the RFA treatment margin, and achieving uniform heat ablation of the whole targeted tissue. Researchers at the University of Dundee have developed a new concept in RFA treatment, designed to effectively overcome these limitations.The next generation, intelligent, RFA device from Dundee is a dynamic-conformal and rotational probe for both ablation and excision of tumor during the same minimally invasive procedure. Although it could be used for liver, lung and other cancers, it is expected to be particularly advantageous in breast cancer conserving treatment. The device has two key novel aspects - a rotational probe and an innovative method of thermal conduction ablation. The novel ablation method is precise and efficient, obtained by a combination of the novel RFA probe and algorithm for controlling the computer-based RF generator requirements.
