Description: Background: Wireless communication standards are constantly evolving to increase the amount of information that can be transmitted between devices.  Relay nodes are used or under investigation for next generation 3G and 4G systems to extend cell coverage and unload overburdened areas of a network.  Relays, however, can add delays and complexities to transmissions. In existing uses of relays, full memory techniques are imposed which impose costly delays. Technology: Techniques to reduce the latency experienced at relay nodes which also provide a reliable link between devices have been developed.  Forward-Backward algorithms and other recursion and probability measures are used to decrease the latency at relay nodes.
