Description of the Technology: NYU has been conducting research on 3-D scanning techniques for several years and has recently developed an inexpensive 3-D scanner that uses commonly available components to produce accurate, detailed 3-D images from real scanned objects. This technology solves the dilemma of creating three-dimensional objects on computers, often complicated, time consuming, and expensive. Using the capabilities of a personal computer, it delivers both color information and geometry. Features and Benefits: Provides both color and geometric data to the user from information gathered using an off-the-shelf video camera mounted on a tripod. This is connected to a light source that projects a line of light on the object from a slight angle. Presents a user interface. Easily hosted on a standard PC or Macintosh computer. Interprets the video feed and creates the geometric data and color information. Applications: Consumer use because it allows 3D scanning to reach a wider range of computer users, reducing cost, complexity, and making it available for use on low-end computers. Also, the addition of realistic life-like faces can help because people are constantly looking for ways to add animation life to 3D scenes as well as create ways to represent themselves on the Internet.
