Seaweed is used in products, providing taste, structure, health benefits

About

The Dutch Seaweed Group is unique in its kind as it controls the entire process from seed cultivation to processing. Hatchery In the hatchery seaweed seeds and plants are produced. The hatchery is located in Kamperland and is part of a marine aquaculture development hub. The location is rented from Stichting Zeeschelp, a foundation that supports marine aquaculture. In the building there is access to an unlimited amount of fresh and filtered seawater from the Oosterschelde. In addition, there is access to marine research facilities. Farm The farm is located on the Oosterschelde. For the farm 10 ha of water is leased from the State Forestry Administration. This 10 ha is fully utilized. After further research the management expects that it is possible to significantly increase the maximum yield by implementing multiple cultivation cycles and by increasing the yield per meter. Land-based cultivation DSG has also set-up a commercial land-based seaweed cultivation farm in the Netherlands. for actual scaling, the best suitable greenhouse location is currently being identified. This land-based farm will use a unique cultivation technology; i.e., environmental conditions and nutrient provision will be controlled and fine-tuned to the specific needs of the seaweed species. Species strains (initially Ulva) will be selected on base of their protein, vitamin and mineral composition, their maximum growth rates, resilience, and ability to reproduce vegetatively. DSG will cultivate in an indoor greenhouse with a recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) to ensure full control of temperature, light and nutrient supply, which will make year-round production possible with predictable yields. Optimal conditions in combination with selecting the best performing species strain ensures a constant high-quality product. This way DSG will be able to fulfil the demanding standards tailored to the customers’ needs. Processing facility To ensure the quality of the seaweed, it is important minimize the time between harvesting and processing. At the production facility, the seaweed is washed and subsequently dried or frozen. The processing facility is located in Yerseke, which is within a 40km distance of the near-shore farm. T
