As a result, micronutrient deficiencies often arise in animals, hindering their proper growth. To combat the negative effects of phytate, commercial feeds incorporate phytase additives to increase digestion and weight gain in younger animals. However, livestock and poultry feeds currently derive these additives from vegetative organisms which do not hold a long shelf life, due to their low thermostability and specificity. Therefore, there is still a need to improve animal diets by developing a more durable, long-lasting feed that can effectively counter the negative effects of phytate and fiber. Summary OSU researchers have developed a robust probiotic mixture with improved thermostability and specificity than current commercial feed. This invention enhances the nutritional value of animal and human diets by increasing availability of nutrients and protecting against specific pathogens. This mixture displays specific enzyme and antimicrobial activity as well as bile acid resistance. Unlike conventional nutrition solutions, this mixture does not require expensive scale-up, as it successfully maintains shelf life while utilizing local and natural resources.
