PROBLEM / OPORTUNITY Sadly, shunt systems have a 50% complication rate within the first two years after implantation. The most common complications are Infections, Over-drainage and Obstructions. Programmable valves have been used to avoid excessive liquid drainage (over-drainage). The reprogramming process is non-invasive, however, in order to verify if the shunt was programmed correctly or to identify if it must be reprogrammed, and to what value, includes the use of diagnostic images and even invasive punctures in the valve reservoir and takes place in 62% of all patients, not only affecting the patient’s quality of life, but also increasing the time, risks and costs associated with these activities. PROPOSAL Device and method for the integral treatment of hydrocephalus DETAILS The device is composed of a digital control system, an electromechanical actuator and a remote monitoring system for the integral treatment of hydrocephalus through the drainage of cerebrospinal fluid. It performs continuous monitoring of intracranial pressure allowing a precise, non-invasive and remote reprogramming process. It also allows early detection of an obstruction in the system and indicates where is this complication occurring, either in the proximal or distal catheter. VALUE PROPOSITION Monitoring and control of cerebrospinal fluid drainage remotely, reducing risks and costs associated with the treatment of hydrocephalus.
