Low toxicity. Bio-degradable antifouling agents. Production can be easily performed on fermenters in large scale.

About

Invention The novel alternative antifouling agents are derived from marine microbes. It is based on the discovery of three strains of marine fungi and a deep-sea bacterium. They can produce small molecular organic compounds that have antibacterial activity as well as inhibitory activity on larval attachment and metamorphosis of barnacle and polychaete, thus providing marine antifouling properties.   Marketing Opportunity Conventional antifouling paints are usually copper or tin based compounds like tributyl tin (TBT) that can prevent fouling by continuously releasing the copper or tin into the surrounding seawater. However, these compounds have negative effects on the marine environment. The novel anti-fouling additives developed by HKUST are bio-degradable with low toxicity. It provides an environment friendly alternative to the current solutions.   Key Benefits Low toxicity Bio-degradable antifouling agents Production can be easily performed on fermenters in large scale
