This assay is for the rapid detection and differentiation of the burkholderia pseudomallei Complex: B. mallei, B. pseudomallei, and B. thailandensiscan.

About

Background: Burkholderia is a gram negative bacteria that causes a disease called Glanders that infects horses, donkeys and mules in Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and Central and South America. The disease, if transferred to humans, is 95% fatal in 7-10 days and 50% fatal in antibiotic treated patients. Another species of the bacteria causes Melioidosis in South East Asia with a 20-50% mortality. These bacteria are recognized by the CDC as Tier 1 select agents. Invention Summary: This assay is for the rapid detection and differentiation of the burkholderia pseudomallei Complex: B. mallei, B. pseudomallei, and B. thailandensiscan. It can directly detect and differentiate between Burkholderia species. It is a real-time quadruplex PCR assay. Previously, no assay had been developed that could differentiate between Burkholderia species.
