The dreamskin polymer was originally developed as a coating for disposable contact lenses. After 5 years of development a modified version of this polymer was capable of binding to fabric with wash durability. The modified polymer was then bound to medical grade silk, registered as a class 1 medical device for the treatment of excema and launched to dermatologists. It is reimbursed by the UK National Health Service.

About

When applied, the Dreamskin polymer forms a hydrogel on the surface of the fibre. The hydrogel has high hygroscopicity (moisture retention) and provides protection against irritants caught in clothing fibres such as Sodium Dodecyl Sulphate (a known irritant commonly found in washing powders). It is a natural anti stat (due to the high moisture content) and the treated textile supports a self healing ability, potentially assisting the repair of damaged skin. The Dreamskin polymer is very durable against home laundering and as an additional benefit also provides a soil release property. The Dreamskin molecule is applied to textiles by ionic coupling, creating a firm bond between fibres and chemical. During the drying process the molecules reorders into a lamella structure, which is similar in structure to the polar group of phospholipids in the human cell membrane. The agents contained within Dreamskin are phospholipid-analogue containing phosphorylcholine polymers. These polymers have been used extensively in the medical world for coating medical devices such as catheters and stents and as moisturising agents within cosmetics. The multi-layer lamella structure formed with these polymers is both hydrophobic and hydrophilic. The hydrophobic element provides an external barrier effect against irritants (effectively displacing other molecules from either attaching to the fabric or from dispersing through fabric during use) and the hydrophilic provides a moisture retaining and enhancing property. The polymer manages moisture across membranes, including skin. The three principal benefits are: Continuous moisturisation of the skin. The polymer repels external irritants such as pollen and washing powder residues. Helps to maintain body temperature. Dreamskin can be formulated in creams and ointments for topical application as well as applied to a wide range of fabrics. There is also considerable interest from global consumer product companies and from major retailers who are interested in developing dreamskin treated products as a skin-friendly finish to clothing and diapers.

Key Benefits

Increases the moisture retention and replenishment of skin. Decreases contact between skin and irritants such as washing powder, pollen and dust. Supports natural skin repair function. The polymer repels external irritants such as pollen and washing powder residues. Helps to maintain body temperature.

Applications

Dreamskin treats eczema by providing moisturisation of the skin 24/7 In consumer markets the dreamskin polymer protects and soothes sensitive skin when applied to fabric.
