Efficiently evaporate solvent from the charged droplets of different sizes to produce dry ions of the analyte.

About

Summary: This invention enables unique features for transferring charged droplets-ions from the ion source (any type, e.g., electrospray or atmospheric MALDI) to the mass spectrometer with high sample utilization. Specifically, the invented device in various embodiments allow one to (1) efficiently evaporate solvent from the charged droplets of different sizes to produce dry ions of the analyte, (2) provide optimal conditions (approach velocity and spacial confinement/focusing) for droplets/ions as they are transmitted from the ion source to the mass spectrometer inlet, (3) to thermolize (cool down) the ions prior to their introduction to the mass spectrometer. These are unique properties, which are out of reach of any presently used devices (such as, for example, commonly used air amplifier or Venturi-device).
