Brief Description The device is designed to capture and convert incident wave energy to pneumatic energy which is used to drive a turbine and generator set to generate electricity. Value proposition/ Benefits  Demonstrates the feasibility of wave energy conversion while being easily accessible for maintenance in an area with existing environmental impact studies. Providing electricity generated from a free and renewable energy source. Enhances the “green” image of a port development. Unique Characteristics The device increases the economic feasibility of ocean energy utilisation by combining a wave energy converter and a breakwater. The impact on the environment is reduced due to the deployment within an existing port development and the permitting procedure is simplified. The device is robust with minimal moving parts ensuring survivability and minimal maintenance. Technical Description The device consists of a hollow concrete structure founded on the seafloor and extended above the water surface. The structure comprises a series of chambers open below the water surface to wave action. Wave induced pressure variation causes the water volume in the chambers to oscillate, which forces entrapped air through and from unidirectional valves to high and from low pressure conduits running along the length of the device. Accumulated airflow drives a turbine and generator set to generate electricity. Innovation Status A site in Table Bay has been identified and a detailed analysis of its wave conditions and energy resource has been conducted.  Numerical and experimental model testing to determine the hydrodynamic efficiency of the device is currently underway. A national phase application was filed for this invention.
