Web-based alcohol and sexual assault prevention program

Introduction: It is estimated that 25 percent of American women have experienced sexual assault. Approximately 50% of those cases involve alcohol consumption by the perpetrator, victim, or both. More than 50% of college students used alcohol in the past month and 33% engaged in heavy episodic drinking (>4 drinks for females and >5 drinks for males in <2 hours). The existing products that are widely used by universities to prevent sexual assault do not target alcohol use and sexual assault victimization, perpetration, and bystander intervention in a single intervention. In addition, existing products that are widely disseminated are not evidence-based to reduce victimization, bystander intervention, or perpetration. Most importantly, no program has provided tailored feedback for all men, women, and LGBTQ students even though students from these demographics have different risk factors. Technology: Georgia State University researcher has developed a web-based personalized feedback program that provides integrated intervention for alcohol use and sexual assault prevention with personalized feedback tailored to the students, university, alcohol use, gender identity, and sexual orientation. This program can be completed in 15-20 minutes. This program targets alcohol use, sexual assault victimization, bystander intervention, and perpetration together within one program.
