Laser Absorptivity Measuring Device

Characterizing the laser absorptivity and efficiency compensation of laser-based processes can provide useful avenues for defect characterization and mitigation; however, laser-metal interactions during welding and metal additive manufacturing are notoriously complex. Existing techniques for measuring laser absorption efficiency rely on reflective rather than direct measurements, require the use of simulative samples that add assumptions, and/or involve large processing setups that behave differently than the genuine process.

RuBisCo

Global demand for high quality digestible protein is expected to substantially outpace population growth over the coming decades. RuBisCo (Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase-oxygenase) is the photosynthetic enzyme in the green leaves of plants and is the most abundant soluble protein on Earth. In addition, RuBisCo is easy to extract and highly digestible. Although RuBisCo is already considered a nearly complete protein source, significant improvements are possible by increasing the incorporation of two key amino acids, methionine (Met) and lysine (Lys), which are typically limiting and costly for a variety of feed applications.

Tunable Fracture Toughness in Composite Laminate

Delamination is a common failure in laminate composite structures. Delamination between plies (interplydelamination) occurs more frequently than fracturing within one ply (intraply-damage). Interply-delamination may be initiated by defects introduced during the material manufacturing process, such as porosity, resin-starved regions, damage from machining, or poor material handling. This damage can also be produced by low velocity impacts which are difficult to detect due to minimal surface damage.

Gold Nanoparticle Supercrystal Chemical Sensors

Metallic nanoparticles such as gold and silver can self-assemble and crystallize into highly ordered arrays known as supercrystals. Highly ordered single supercrystals have great potential in areas such has optics, electronics, and sensor platforms; however, obtaining high-quality supercrystals for production scale usage and device integration has been a limitation in their wide-scale adoption. Sandia researchers have synthesized gold nanoparticles into large supercrystals with chemical detection sensitivity nine times higher than existing nanoparticle technologies. This development has potential for useful applications in the chemical detection of drugs or explosives as well as integrations in optics and electronic devices.

Green Extraction of Rare Earth Elements from Coal Waste

Rare Earth Elements are present in a range of sources, including secondary waste streams, yet remain difficult to isolate because of their tendency to form mixtures. Extraction is a highly complex process that can vary significantly between material types and even individual deposits. In traditional mining processes, initial physical separation consumes a high volume of raw materials and produces significant amount of waste in the form of tailings. Follow-up processing to extract the desired metals from mineral concentrates typically requires industrial-grade chemicals and solvents. The resulting hazardous liquid wastes, radionuclides, and heavy metal residues must be carefully managed according to environmental and occupational health standards, adding significant risk and increased costs.

Inductive Circuit Sensor for Intrusion Detection

Over the last forty years, balanced magnetic switching (BMS) has become the standard form of intrusion detection for secure sites throughout the United States. BMS systems rely on permanent magnets which can detect if a door has been opened or closed but not when it has been breached or penetrated. High security sites require enhanced forms of intrusion detection to supplement BMS systems. Alternative systems such as video analytics or passive infrared sensors perform best in static ambient conditions, which are difficult to maintain and frequently result in nuisance alarms.
