Expertise

Dr. Tarek Rashwan is currently researching a range of environmental engineering topics that support a low-carbon and circular economy, such as assessing hydrogeological conditions for safe nuclear waste storage, large-scale hydrogen storage systems, and scaling-up a novel thermochemical waste-to-energy technique based on smouldering combustion. These projects focus on understanding heat and mass transfer dynamics in porous media systems via experimental, analytical, and numerical methods. Dr. Rashwan led multidisciplinary, collaborative research projects with teams of students and multiple industry, academic, and government collaborators. In addition to his academic objectives, his research has been heavily influenced by the needs of industry partners, which led to multiple joint publications and patents. Dr. Rashwan is keen to join with enterprises to promote further collaboration. Dr. Rashwan’s current research focus is on using smouldering to efficiently valorize challenging organic waste streams, e.g., with high moisture content and low volatility. He is seeking industry partners in need of solutions to these challenging wastes.
