Derek Schipper is a recognized leader in the areas of organic synthesis, materials, and applications in organic electronic devices established by his extensive background work over the past decade. Early in his academic career, he was already being recognized by many prestigious NSERC awards such as Canada Graduate Scholarships-Masters, Postgraduate Scholarships-Doctoral scholarship and Postdoctoral Fellowship. Dr. Schipper joined the University of Waterloo in late 2013 as an Assistant Professor. In 2014, soon after beginning his independent academic career, he was awarded a highly-sought-after Tier 2 Canada Research Chair under the specialization of organic materials synthesis. Dr. Schipper has experience commercializing his research as established though past collaborations with industry and he also spun off a start-up company from his research. Dr. Schipper has published 25 peer-reviewed articles including 4 in the widely read Journal of the American Chemical Society and 3 in the respected journal Angewandte Chemie International Edition with one of those granted the prestigious status of Very Important Paper. Dr. Schipper’s research is also routinely highlighted not only in the academic literature but also popular news outlets, illustrating the relevance of his work to general public. Additionally, to date Dr. Schipper has successfully attracted $2 million in research funding, trained more than 50 highly qualified personnel (HQP), and has given 35 invited lectures.
