Summary

Background

Our Technology division provides a suite of services in the design, maturation and implementation of new technologies and engineering services for sustainable energy production around the world.

We do this by helping organizations at all stages of their project lifecycle to assess, test, and implement world-class innovations to support plant optimizations; lowering the costs of production; and reducing the environmental impact of operations. We work closely with a network of global partners to create opportunities for a more sustainable energy future.

Challenge

Our client, a Global Oil & Gas company, is currently looking for near market or market ready technologies to prevent liquid metal embrittlement.

Trace amounts of mercury is present in hydrocarbon reservoirs. It occurs as elemental (metallic), organic, and inorganic compounds. Whenever mercury is encountered in oil and gas production and processing operations it must be contained and removed from the product stream. One of the problems created by mercury is Liquid Metal Embrittlement (LME) . LME is a form of corrosion leading to crack initiation and propagation primarily in equipment constructed from aluminium. Liquid metal embrittlement (LME) can lead to catastrophic failure of various products across a wide range of industries. LME of aluminium heat exchangers is a key concern for LNG plants.

Our client is looking for innovations to prevent LME occurring in the metals and alloys found in oil and gas production and processing facilities.

Solutions should be able to meet the following criteria:

  •  Eliminate mercury induced LME for the metals and alloys found in oil and gas production and processing facilities
  •  Remain effective over a wide range of temperatures (from >200°C to cryogenic)
  •  Resistant to mechanical processes, chemical processes and deformation
  •  Ability to be applied to required equipment at industrial scale
