Summary

Background

We are a large oil and gas producer who is focused on innovation and bringing environmentally sound solutions to market.

Challenge

Naphthenic acids are a complex mixture of organic acids present in heavy crude oil and bitumen. The total acid number (TAN) is the amount of potassium hydroxide in milligrams that is needed to neutralize the acids in one gram of oil. Generally, an acid number of more than 1 is considered high. They are a major cause of corrosion in different processing, transportation and storage equipment of oil producers and their refineries.

We are looking for environmental friendly and cost effective technologies to reduce the TAN number of bitumen in one of our bitumen production plants.
