Summary

Background

Direct Line Group is a FTSE 250, UK leading personal lines insurer, providing motor, home, rescue, pet and commercial insurance to millions of customers.

DLG Auto Services is Direct Line Group’s UK network of 22 wholly owned body shops. By investing in new technologies we are preparing the business for the future and will have a better understanding of how technology will affect the design and manufacture of cars. Our high operating efficiency allows us to deliver excellent cost control whilst meeting our approved Science Based Targets through lowering emissions

Challenge

DLG Auto Services is looking for new, innovative solutions to provide heat energy into the paint spray booths for cars that don’t use fossil fuels. The paint spray booths at each of the 23 body shop sites are the biggest consumer of fossil fuels (above heating systems and fleet vehicles) so it is critical to eliminate gas from this process to meet our Science Based Target of reducing emissions by nearly 50% by 2030.

We would love to hear from innovators who could assist us with this sustainability challenge who can;

  • Offer paint spray booth solutions or technology that do not use gas or other fossil fuels (additionally we are not looking at biomass/wood pellet powered solutions)
  • Provide technologies or solutions that can retrofit onto existing paint spray booths to provide alternative energy sources to heat the paint spray booths
  • Suggest alternative fuel sources to fossil fuel gas to power and heat the paint spray booths that will reduce emissions produced by this equipment.

Direct Line Group is particularly interested in solutions that are ready for market, but all stages of development will be considered.

What's in it for you?

A successful collaboration could mean implementing the chosen solution(s) on a single bodyshop site where we would work in partnership to test and learn from the change.

If this trial is successful there is then the opportunity to implement this solution across the UK network of 22 bodyshop sites, adapting and building in the lessons learned, and developing a strong partnership with Direct Line Group for the future.

This is a global Challenge and Direct Line is willing to collaborate with both individuals and freelancers, and other industry participants, universities, etc.

Direct Line will have an internal review of all applications once the Challenge has closed. Successful applicants will be contacted at this point
